Step
1: Make a new image and fill it with a
metal texture. If you don't have any
textures try freetextures
or make one using one of our tutorials. |

Step
2: For the basic scratched look take
the dodge tool or a white brush with size
1 and set the exposure (opacity in psp) of
the tool to 50 or so. Now just 'scratch'
around the image by moving your mouse real
fast =). In my pic I only want really mild
scratches, so I used a low exposure. |

Step
3: Add a bit more depth to the bigger
scratches by using the burn tool and
painting right a pixel beside the white
line. Weather the line is below or above
the white line depends on where your light
source is coming from. My imaginary light
source was coming from top-left in this
image. |

Step
4: Now using the burn tool create a
dark spot and a line going through it.
This will be our first hole. Switch to
dodge tool again and paint below the dark
spot to add some highlights. |

Step
5: Now let's make the hole pop out a
bit. Using the burn tool (or a black
brush) paint below the hole to make a
shadow and with the dodge tool paint above
the hole for the highlight. Blur it to
make it look smoother. |

Step
6: Now repeat steps 3-6 to create two
as many holes as you like. |

Step
7: If you want to do a hole that
doesn't pop out, first paint a whitish
spot with the dodge tool (this will be the
scratch). |

Step
8: Now take the burn tool and inside
the whitish spot draw your hole. (here I
don't mean 'draw your hole' as a part of
your body! Maybe in the next tutorial =).
Anyways, you've just got yourself a nice
scratchy hole. |

Step 9:
And this is what the final image looks
like.
The main
thing you have to take care of is the
lighting. Always make sure it's coming
from the same angle as the rest of the
image.
