Qworkshop3 Tutorials

Notes on Detail brushes by LordDaimos

Why an update of the tutorial?

Matter saw this tutorial and contacted me on IRC and told me that the Detail Brushes don't affect the r_speeds at all. All it does is to reduce the amount of vis data so your computer don't need to vis your level for several days. I also received a mail from PHI. He wanted to know if turning brushes into Details would remove his 'cool shadows'. But it will not remove them. The only thing that the Detail Brushes affect is the vis time and not the r_speeds that i told earlier...

How important is it to make the map with detail brushes?

It is not really important… But it will speed up your compile… When i compiled my second map i did not know about Detail brushes at all, so the vis time was about 2 days+. Then i saw a post at the Q3F Mappers forum and thought that it maybe help. And it did. In the next version the vis time was 16sec… I just turned all small things (stairs, small details and other stuff) into detail…

Explanation:
If a brush is a detail Q3MAP will see it as something that don't need to be vis'ed. You should only turn the inner parts of a map into detail because that it can cause leaks if you make a 'detail hole'. But all things where it doesn't matter if you can see through it (you will no see trough details but it will be vised behind them :) should be considered to be turned into detail just to speed up the compile. Just remember to not make a hole out into the void when making detail brushes…

Commands that are good to use then turning into detail:

CTRL + D
Turns Detail Brushes on/off in the 3D View

CTRL + M
Makes the selected brush Detail

CTRL + SHIFT + S
Makes the selected brush Solid
