Making
a doorway prefab
This is the long tutorial
as I will walk you thru all the steps of making a
doorway prefab.
The first thing I do is make a simple box
map.
Then I build a brush the same size as the doorway texture.
Put the texture on both sides and caulk on all others. The
fast way to do this is first select the brush then caulk
(its in the texture/common/caulk) then hold down ctrl and
shift keys then left click on the face in the 3d window
then left click on the doorway texture in your texture
window. To select multiple face hold down the ctrl-shift-
alt keys the left click on multiple faces.
Hint don't move the brush, resize it by increasing the height
and width until its the same size as the doorway texture.
I also use snap to grid at 32 for this stage...
Should look like this...

Next I start cutting it up into smaller brush's. Use the clip
tool for this if you know how or do the following.
When I do this I make a copy of the first brush by first selecting
it (left click in the 3d window) then hitting ctrl-c then
ctrl-v to paste this will give you a copy of the first
brush in the same space. Next I resize both brushes (remember
don't move them by dragging, resize them)
Should look something like this.

If your stuck here and can't figure out how I did this go
to this page for a more detail example
of how to cut up the door way.
Ok maybe not you will have to do some edge dragging, or
clipping to get
the angles on the inside trim pieces.

Select that brush then hit the E key notice all the dots
on the brush these are control points, lower your snap to
grid to say 2, now left click and hold on the upper corner
that you want to move, now drag it down.
Keep a eye on the 3d window zoom in if you have to stop
moving the point when it looks right. Repeat with the
other inside trim brush... Ok so now it looks like the
above pic right...
Now you need to split the center brush in the door way
into two equal sizes. You now the drill by now select it
then ctrl-c then ctrl-v resize both so it looks like
this..

Now the fun starts its time to turn these
brushes into bevels (curves) also known by simple patch
mesh's.
First select one of them, now go to curve then bevel.
Like this.

Next you will have to hit either the
or
buttons to spin the bevel into position. Then resize the
bevel in both the x view and the z view to the right size,
again don't drag the bevel, resize it.
Now it should look like the pic below.

Now with the bevel still selected go to
the curve menu and then matrix then invert or (ctrl+I).
Then pick a texture from the texture window. For this tutorial
I used gothic_door/xian_tourneyarch_inside2.
Now hit the Shift+S key to bring up patch
properties window and then hit
natural.
Now repeat these steps for the other
half....
Should look like this

Now we need to caps on these bevels.
First select one of the bevels then go to curves then cap,
then inverted bevel a little window will pop up like this.

select the inverted bevel.
Now you have caps for the bevel but wait
there's more.
While the cap's and main bevel are still selected. Right
click on them in the x or y view a little window will pop
up now hit the ungroup button like this.

Note (You may want to use the tab key to cycle
the meshes in the group instead of ungrouping I just like
them ungrouped)
Now unselect the bevel and cap. (esc key)
Then reselect the caps (left mouse button while holding the
shift key.) Or do one at a time.
Next select the doorway texture.
Looks ugly don't it don't sweet it we will fix that.
With one of the caps selected that has the doorway texture
applied to hit press the Shift+S key then natural then, ok..
Still ugly huh..
Now hold down ctrl and shift and press the
n key keep
pressing the n key until it looks right...
Repeat this for all caps....
Now it looks like we are almost there right well not
quite.
The way we built this will cause sparkle's on the edge of
the bevel's. This is not good, so we are going to fix that
and also merge some brush's..
Ok lets start.
Our doorway looks like this.

The brush's next to the caps need to be the same size as
the bevels.
So lets change them until they look like this.

Notice I used the edge tool on the side and top brush to
make the beveled corner...
Now select the bottom trim and outside
joining brush.
Like this.

Now hit the merge brush button.
or ctrl-M
Now that was easy huh, do the other side too.
All we have left to do now is texture the
inside trim.
And then select all the brush's and bevels
and cap's.
And then hit the edit button, then save selection as
prefab.
The next time you need this doorway in
your map all you have to do is load prefab and move it
into position....
