Grates and Transparent Objects

shot0010.jpg (15478 bytes)

Grates are the subject of this lesson, a simple trick to pull of but can give your map more depth and a stronger feel to it.

Load up your map and somewhere in the floor drag out a brush about 128x128 units and apply the nodraw textures to it, this can be found in the common texture set.

Okay the next thing to do is load the base_floor texture set and find the texture called pjgrate2.

with this select hold down CTRL+SHIFT and RIGHT click on the top of the texture, we only want the texture on this side.

Move the brush where you want it be placed and then reload the common texture set.

If you tried the level as it is now you'll find out that you could walk right through the grate so we need to make it solid,

find the clip texture and draw out a brush the same size as the grate  and place it in the exact same position. (you may need to enable it from the View>Show>Show Clip Brush menu to see it in the editor)

Compile your map and check it out.

To Create the effect in the top picture all you need to do is cut a hole into the ground and make sure it's got no leaks and pop some fog or lava into it and place your grate and clip brush over the top
