Layering Walls

Nothing looks worse than a boring flat wall using the same texture.

  

As you can easily see the shot on the right looks much better and it even looks like a proper level :)

By spending time on your level can make or break it, so these few tips should be learnt well.

Trims

These will give your map that real look to it and it helps break a flat boring wall apart.
For the shot on the right I created my trim brush using the gothic_trim/baseboard09 texture making it it's standard height of 64 units, I then placed one of the gothic_block textures directly on top and made that 128 units heigh.

If you room your working on is quite tall then place one of the trim brushes halfway up to break up the blandness.
The vertical trims are a great for separating walls

for this example I could easily use 2 different wall textures on either side of the trim and it wouldn't look out of place.

I hope some of this info has been of interest and helps give your level a better feel.
