Bluenews has posted the below translation of a report on GameStar Online about the first public showing of Q3 bots in action :

During a presentation in Edinburg id software, for the first time, presented the bots against which you fight in the solo mode. There are to be approximately 20 different computer fighters in the finished game, among them a futuristic inline skater that hops over other players. When desired, beginners are guided by a tutor and make a sightseeing tour of the arena: Where are the best weapons, how do you come to the Quad Damage, where are secrets hidden?

A new update from the Main man John Carmack 1.08 plus a Mac version Monday night!!!!

I apologize for not getting the Mac version released this last time.

All conspiracy theories aside, here is what actually happened:

I had my San Jose travel scheduled a while ago, and we were expecting
to have the release done before I left. We didn't quite make it, and
nobody else at the office knew how to build the mac version after
Cash made some last minute changes.

When I got back, Graeme was taking off to move his family down here.
Graeme is in charge of building all the installs for our releases.

I considered just tossing new executables with the latest fixes
for everything, but some data has changed, and it just isn't
worth the hassle right now.

We will be making proper new releases for all architectures monday
night when he gets back.

* log all client transitions, item pickups, and kills
* changed joystick axis to act just like arrow keys so they
can be bound in the controls menu for strafing.
Yes, this does remove slow walking from joystick movement,
but it makes everything a lot cleaner.
* fix up PantherXL trackball support
* removed bad clear command from dedicated console clear button
* tournement queuing of spectators to enter the game
* track wins and losses as long as you stay on a tourney server
* spectators are now in fly mode instead of noclip, and use teleporters
* pass serverTime instead of msec for command timing, prevents
timescale cheating
* track dual eventParms on player state
* draw crosshair and name in spectator mode
* fixed rcon
* r_colorMipLevels texture visualization tool
* don't allow weapon select and cycle when in follow mode
* archive cl_yawspeed and cl_pitchspeed
* don't draw place line on scoreboard when spectating
* fixed console chatting during intermission
* better recursive error handling
* fixed curve surface flags (no impact when landing on a curve bug)

Just updated my Dm strategy page more rules to frag by.

One of the visitors to this site has a question for ya,

Have you noticed any bot-like activity on the Q3A servers lately?  By no means am I the best player, but I can usually hold my own and am definitely not fun when I can get someone cornered.  I and a friend almost religiously take first and second places (either he or I) on most servers we play at (with excpetions of course) but lately we've both noticed some SEVERE bot-like action from players with remedial skills.  I've had a few too many rockets waiting for me around corners.. I've gotten railed by someone running and jumping and hopping on the jump pads four times in a row while I had full armor and extra health and this person is OBVIOUSLY a novice.. no dodging skills.  FORTUNATELY for myself and my partner, we've found that the people who need the bots to play are easy to beat and easy to target, so our status hasn't been affected as much, but I still find it VERY frustrating!  Anyway, I've heard more than just myself bitching about them, and I'll stop for now.  I guess if that's how it goes, I'll just get a more refined railgun and learn exactly how narrow a miss I can't get away with.  On a side note, we do play on a T1 with excess bandwidth to spare, so I will give that much to the modem users out there.  What else is there to say though, you've gotta pay to play.

If you have any ideas or have heard anything, pass them by me.  Stephen Stull <sstull@4state.com>

Don't know how I missed this one if you haven't seen the Q3 story Called Quake 3 the Beckoning its at the  Oxygen tank. Go check it out great read. This is the kinda stuff I would like to be sent here (Hint, hint)

07/25/99

Added some more screen shots today.

Anybody know how to run a demo?

I have tried play demo (file name) or play (file name) or demo (file name) so on and so on.(help)

Also I have a complaint to all you winner's that play q3 and "say things like I could kill ya if you didn't use the jump pads" I say get over it and play. If I can beat ya with my 300 ping you need to practice more and quit complaining.

07/24/99

To record demos in the new test 1.07

g_syncronousclients 1
record (Pic a name for demo here no quotes)
g_syncronousclients 0

For those of you still trying to figure out how to make maps rotate on your server, save the following into a config:

set d1 "map q3test2 ; set nextmap vstr d2"
set d2 "map q3test1 ; set nextmap vstr d3"
set d3 "map q3tourney ; set nextmap vstr d1"
vstr d1

and execute the config via your server's command line.

Graeme "Zaphod" Devine had this to say in his latest .Plan update:

7/21/99

Mac Users! We're not ignoring you, we're just having a slight technical problem with the Macintosh build right now. BTW, I'm in love with that new iBook! When they ship that's going to be /the/ portable.

One more Quake 3 site Quake 3 post is saying goodbye The site is still up but he is looking for some one else to run it.

I am still looking for new Quake3 sites to add to my Quake3 links page know any good ones send them in Raptor(Ctc)

Just in over at Rust they posted my pic called Campers nightmare very cool. If you haven't been to Rust go check it out The site rules when it comes to game editing (not just Quake games.)

Just seen I new guide called Q3tourney at the Oxygen tank here is a little bit of it about the new lighting gun they call the shaft "Shafting is damn useful when mixed with the rocket launcher. If you manage to get a few rockets lodged into your opponent, you can easily clean things up with your shaft. Conversely, if you chase someone into an open room, you can Don't forget that other people can hear you if you whip out your shaft, just like the railgun, so don't take out your shaft until you're ready to play with it. Shaft Can you dig it?" go here to read it all

Graeme Devine plan update

Graeme Devine has updated his .plan on Q3A and the future ...

1.07 is out there. Please try and find cheat exploits and report them to us!

Also, keep in mind that this is a test, and not the final product.
There's a lot in the test which is very temporary, so while we`ve taken great pride in putting out very solid test releases, we`re still working hard on the final product and very much appreciate your feedback (q3feedback@idsoftware.com) in getting this product right for you - the players -

I get a bunch of feedback from people wanting this product to be more like Quake 1 or Quake 2, while others look for us to innovate and make something brand new. Quake 3 is arcade deathmatch, nothing more and nothing less. It`s not Quake 1 nor Quake 2, but does nod it`s head in the direction of the online DM version of both those products (and apparently pissing off both parties at the same time).

Look to the next id product to give you the "brand new" gameplay and world. Quake 3 Arena will keep basically with what you`ve seen and read about up until now and it`s now time to put this one to bed.

07/20/99

LInux and window users the new test is out!!! Window users if you already grabbed the 1.06 there is a patch to 1.07  Go to the list of minors listed on the q3test button on your left. What are you waiting for go,go now.

07/19/99

A new update (q3test phase 5 already?) read on.

Not tonight. We're fixing the cheat exploits. Users who downloaded the current
build should expect a 3-5 meg update (so you don't have to download the
whole thing).

7/19/99

Okay. More. Must Sleep Soon.

We're testing a new version of the build right now that has some new stuff in it:

- the ; key now remains bound (for all you lefties)
- the timescale exploit has been plugged (again, actually this was in the last
version of the test and a lot of people were silently using it)
- LAN servers display properly
- IPX is working
- the enabling cheat exploit has been fixed
- CPU time for servers should be nicer
- an exploit in the tourney map has been filled
- joystick support (there is no conspiracy here, but this might require more time
to fix than just tonight)

We're looking to get win32/Macintosh out there, hopefully tonight, but probably
tomorrow by the time we're through checking all this out.

My wall paper pic is on the index page of the Oxygen tank web site (Pic of the day) very cool

I just see at the Oxygen tank new tabs for gamespy

The ShugaShack, home of Steve Gibson and all his ho's, has released even more GameSpy filters for you to play with.

The new filters, which were created by Givens McNeill, sort your servers into 1.06 servers, Teamplay, FFA, and 1v1 servers.

Grab the filters, sort your $h!t, and get fraggin!

Good Bye -- 07:53 EST Update by Shadow
I'm making this final news update to tell you all that we are closing down. At midnight today the site will shut down. I would like to say that the reasons for closing are many, I've lost a lot of interest in Quake and computers in general and I just can't really afford it any more. A lot of the site will be deleted today and will be all gone bye midnight.

I would just like to thank everyone who helped with the site. I would like to say a special thank you to Nexus as he put a hell of a lot of work into the site and the whole of the rest of the team too. I'd also like to thank everyone who visited us and came back, and a big shout goes out to the guys at id. I my have lot a bit of interest in the games but you have to admire the class they have.

Long live id...

I'm removing the link to this site its a shame I liked there site.

Been playing the new test most of the day what a blast the lighting gun is a lot of fun

I new update about the new q3test  1.06
Name: Graeme Devine
Email: zaphod@idsoftware.com
Description: Some Guy
Project:

Some variable things we missed or are hard to find in the readme:

g_gametype

A value of 0 here indicates classic “Free For All”, a value of 1 indicates
“Tournament Play” and a value of 2 indicates “Team Deathmatch”.

So, to start a dedicated server in tournament mode, you would use:

quake3 +set dedicated 2 +set zone tournaments +set g_gametype 1 +map q3tourney

The warmup time for tournament play is set with g_warmup. A tournament
game is implicitly a one on one match, and further players are automatically
entered as spectators (note, when the game starts, all clients, including the
spectators respawn). You can follow the players by using “team follow1”,
“team follow2”, and you can be a scoreboard by using “team scoreboard”.

We appear to have broken joystick support somewhat between the first IHV
drop and the final release of the test. We’ll address that (so don’t start the
email bombardment on it!).

Expect the master server to be up and down over the weekend, now we have
protocol 38 servers out there in large numbers we’re able to tune that stuff so
it works a wee bit better.

Thanks for the support!

I played Quake3 test on a lan network today what fun, having zero ping is a blast.

I just archived last months news this page was getting a little long.

So who’s the best at id?

We were playing Xian’s new tourney map (it will be in the next release of
q3test) within the company and Tim decided it would be a hoot to have a mini
id “tournament”. We huddled in the observation room watching (and shouting
a great deal) match after match unfold in the new spectator modes until the final
game. Everyone at id played and when they weren’t playing, they were watching
and cheering intently.

So who’s the best?

John “The Terminator” Carmack won quite handily, convincing us all further that
there really is some code in there that says “If (player==Alloy)”. Second place
went to our esteemed CEO Todd “Hold Still Dammit While I Frag You” Hollenshead.
The rest of us where suitably humbled…(but we all claimed it’s because we work
so much).

It was a good test of the tournament code and great fun. We will be doing the
same thing in-house again soon since the method led to some good changes. Next
time however, there will be a few changes. The emergency phone call to Todd from
Activision is already planned, and we’re thinking the arrival of a new Ferrari catalog
mid game for John will throw him off for the required microseconds to remove the
ball from his mouse.

So where’s that darn test?

Like the Great Prophet Zarquon said, “all sorts of things popped up”. It’s still “soon”.
We need to merge code, test, and do a drop to IHVs to make sure everything is
hunky-dory with them. The tourney map needs a wee bit more tweaking, and some
of the tourney code needs a little bit more work and testing. There’s a lot of new
stuff in there!

BTW, Dungeon Keeper 2 is one of the best games I’ve played in a long time. It's not
delayed the test at all. Honest.

07/08/99

I heard that the next quake 3 arena test wll be out soon check back often.

07/07/99

Just seen in the Gamers Gazette

ACTIVISION: N64 To Start Quakin'

Mayhem a' plenty is scheduled for the week of June 28th, this date now
being set as the ship date for Quake II(tm) for the Nintendo(r) 64. The
game will head into some 10,000 retail outlets. You'll carry out
reconnaissance missions well with enemy territory in this title that was
executively produced and directed by id Software, with distribution by
Activision. The N64 game offers new levels and legendary multiplayer
experience as Earth launches its final assault against alien aggressors.
You operate as a Special Operations Space Marine and must infiltrate and
destroy the aliens' heavily fortified military installations. You'll find
yourself dodging enemy fire, crawling through dangerous shafts, making
your way through murky waters, all as you explore the 3D environments
wherein the enemy awaits you. There are 19 levels as you come face-to-face
with the cybernetic Gunner or the deadly Tank -- get them or they'll get
you. Your powerful arsenal of weapons includes grenade launchers,
hyperblasters and railguns. The game was developed for the N64 by Raster
Productions and as many as two to four players can compete against one
another. You can also play against up to three of your friends in
DeathMatch, FragTeams, FlagWars or DeathTag, with each game having its own
rules, scoring, and winning strategies. There are ten, specially-designed,
multiplayer arenas. Frag your browser to www.activision.com for additional
factoids.

=> ACTIVISION: Even More Quakin' Going On

Well, you just learned that Quake II is heading for the Nintendo 64. And
Macintosh gamers continue to look glum -- hey, where's our version of the
game? If it's running on the PC, if it's running on the N64, it should
also be running on the Mac. Well, Activision and id Software totally agree
with such sentiments and have announced that Quake II(tm) is now shipping
to the retail channels for the Macintosh. The conversion of id Software's
game to the Mac was conducted by Logicware and the distribution will be by
Activision. For those that didn't quite know this fact, but more than ONE
MILLION units (PC/Win95) of this game have shipped worldwide since the
game launched in early December of 1997! This Mac frag feast will have you
hunting through 3D environments consisting of 39 levels for some 18
monsters are you attempt to save the Earth from total obliteration. The
Mac version offers multiplayer gaming from two to 32 players, or more, via
LAN or via the Internet. Once again, more info can be found at
www.activision.com

No news for a few days now but I did find a cool Quake 3 site, also Iam still looking for more. If you know of any please let me know. Anyway here it is QUAKE-3-ARENA.COM Latest News High graphics site but very cool.

I am also thinking of adding a Quake3 art page, artist out there send me a link to your work or if the art isn,t too big (under 1 meg) and you want to share it send it right in.   My email Raptor{Ctc}

07/04/99

Still looking for some feedback about this site and or Quake 3 news anything that is worth posting on this news page will be, so go send it in on my feedback form link top of this page.

Added a cool pic in the model area it is not a model but still nice.

07/03/99

There is a Q3A preview that goes along with the Carmack interview from yesterday. It includes some new screenshots, including one of the new rail effect. It seems there will be about 20 different models and no player classes:

One thing that will not make it into the game is a character class structure. The team toyed with the idea, but eventually found it to be unworkable in a deathmatch environment.
