Here is a simple
yet effective way to create nice looking
terrain.
First, Load up
any texture you want to use for the terrain, I
strongly suggest a type of ground texture.
Create your first
brush and make 8 units high and 64x64 in
length/width.
In
the XY top view duplicate the brush 5 times or
how ever many times you need to.

Switch
to XZ view, select one brush and Ctrl face drag
the brush till it becomes a nice slope, Select
the second brush and Ctrl face drag it so its
align with the first brush. Keep doing this
until you have aligned all the brushes to make a
nice sloping ground.

Select
all the brushes and then duplicate them by
pressing space bar. Move them next to the old
brushes and then Ctrl face drag them to make
another slope.

Keep
duplicating and face dragging the selected
brushes until you've made a nice looking
combination.

This
is what I came up with in the end.
